Harmonic Analysis

In this exercise, you will be asked to analyse a harmonic progression using Roman numerals (I, IV, V6, etc.).

Exercise options

Choral - these exercises use four-part harmony. Select the type of chord to be used in the progression (green indicates selection).

  • I, IV, and V triads: use only triads of the I, IV and V degrees.
  • Triads: triads of any degree.
  • Seventh chords: seventh chords and triads.

Inversions: exercises using inversions.

Non-harmonic tones: exercises using non-harmonic tones.

Instrumental - these exercises are written for the piano. Some chords may be incomplete. They make use of inversions and non-harmonic tones, and they may use more than one major or minor key.

  • Sevenths: seventh chords.

Other options

  • Stop after: select this option to stop the exercise after a certain number of minutes or exercises.

The exercise

Analyse the chord progression using Roman numerals.

  • Each button represents a chord in the progression. To identify a chord, click on its corresponding button and use the Function Palette to answer (see the next section). Once you have identified each chord correctly, the question marks will be replaced with the analysis.
