Contrapunctus IX is a double fugue. A new subject (S1) is presented in the exposition. After the exposition an episode leads to the first presentation of subject S1 and the subject of the Art of the Fugue (S2). Several presentations of both subjects and episodes complete the fugue. The subject presentations alternate between the D minor key and related keys using invertible counterpoint at the twelve.
