The prelude from Suite BWV 995 is divided into two large sections.
We start in G minor with a G pedal for the first three bars.
A chromatic movement then takes us to the fourth degree, at which point the pedal reappears.
A cadence to the tonic in bar 9 affirms the key of G minor.
In bar 10, the dominant of G minor transforms into D minor, and the melodic idea from the first bars reappears in D minor.
In bar 13, D minor becomes D diminished, serving as the second degree of C minor.
In bar 16, C minor serves as the ii degree of B-flat major.
Bar 18: We return to D minor.
Bar 27: D minor becomes the dominant D of G, preparing for the contrapuntal section.
