Introduction and first phrase The introduction begins with a dominant chord containing a flat ninth. This top note, or ninth, then descends until it reaches the chord's fifth. The repeated rhythmic pattern of sixteenth notes in the right hand and the accompanying pattern in the left hand is repeated throughout the prelude:
