We can create new scales by starting an existing scale from any of its notes. We call these scales modes. The modes we can derive from the major scale are called major scale modes. They are used in jazz to aid improvisation, and composers such as Debussy and Ravel often used them in their music.
These modes are a modern creation inspired by the medieval Gregorian modes. Some of them have survived in the folk music of some regions. This is the case of the Phrygian mode in the Andalusian music of Spain.
