The Prelude has the following structure:
| Measures | Section | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 17 | Exposition | It introduces the motives that will be used throughout the prelude. The key of E major is maintained and only the tonic chord is employed. |
| 17 to 29 | Arpeggios | A harmonic progression consisting of arpeggios, where the harmony changes measure by measure and note by note. |
| 29 to 66 | First Development | The motives from the introduction are developed and transformed. We visit the E major, F# minor (ii), C# minor (vi), B major (V) and A major (IV) keys. |
| 67 to 79 | Arpeggios | This section is identical to measures 17 through 20, but transposed to A major. |
| 79 to 130 | Second Development | This development begins in A major and modulates to B minor, F# minor and E major. Although B minor is closely related to A major, it is distantly related to E major, the main key. |
| 130 to 139 | Coda | E major key. |
