Structure

The Prelude has the following structure:

Measures Section Comments
1 to 17 Exposition It introduces the motives that will be used throughout the prelude. The key of E major is maintained and only the tonic chord is employed.
17 to 29 Arpeggios A harmonic progression consisting of arpeggios, where the harmony changes measure by measure and note by note.
29 to 66 First Development The motives from the introduction are developed and transformed. We visit the E major, F# minor (ii), C# minor (vi), B major (V) and A major (IV) keys.
67 to 79 Arpeggios This section is identical to measures 17 through 20, but transposed to A major.
79 to 130 Second Development This development begins in A major and modulates to B minor, F# minor and E major. Although B minor is closely related to A major, it is distantly related to E major, the main key.
130 to 139 Coda E major key.
