Sarabande

The sarabande is a slow dance in triple meter. There is a debate about whether it originated in the Iberian Peninsula, possibly influenced by Africa, or if it came from the Spanish colonies in the Americas. It has a binary form.

The harmony in this sarabande is unique. To help you understand it better, we have added a staff showing the chords in blocks, and marked the ornamental notes in red. Bach often hints at the harmony, leaving us to fill in the rest.
