Subject presentation or exposition

The soprano presents the subject (S). The bass answers in the dominant key (F# minor).

• There is a third presentation in F# minor by the soprano in measure 5
• A countersubject (CS) appears with the second and third subjects.

Each subject presentation has a small variation in the last notes. In this image, we compare the first subject, with the second (measure 4) and third (measure 7):
