Invention No. 12 BWV 783 in A Major by Bach
José Rodríguez Alvira
Subject presentation or exposition
The soprano plays subject 1 (S1) and the bass subject 2 (S2).
The voices exchange subjects in measure 3. We are now in E major (dominant key).
The first two notes of S2 in measure 3 are now G - A instead of the expected E - F. This variation will be used in the invention, probably because it is harmonically more effective.
In measure 5 we return to A major.
Several motives from the subjects will appear through the invention. Note that motive d is motive b transformed by inversion or contrary movement (upper left corner in the image)
