Syncopation
Rhythmic effect caused by the use of notes played on weak beats or weak sections of a measure and tied over strong beats.
Syncopation is common in many styles of music. Jazz, African and Caribbean music make a very heavy use of syncopations as shown in the next Caribbean music excerpt:
